Avant-Garde and Editorial: MAKE UP FOR EVER Artists Inspire

The relationship between Blanche Macdonald and MAKE UP FOR EVER goes far beyond business. Every Makeup student is introduced to the professional grade cosmetics line in the kit they receive on the first day of school and Blanche Macdonald’s CurliQue Beauty Boutique is still the only pro store in Western Canada to carry the entire MAKE UP FOR EVER range.

Creativity is at the core of both Blanche Macdonald and MAKE UP FOR EVER, which is why the latter chose to fly two of their top artists, Alexandre Deslauriers and Marilyne Foisy to Vancouver to give a pair of exclusive presentations at our Atelier Campus. Their message: inspiration!

It’s easy to put ourselves in a box. I want students to see outside that box on every level – with their clothes, their career and their creativity. You can shape the artist you want to become.

“I want students to be fearless,” explained MAKE UP FOR EVER guest artist Alexandre. Having worked multiple Fashion Weeks in Milan and New York, Alexandre understands that creativity and the highest levels of professionalism go hand in hand.

“It’s easy to put ourselves in a box. I want students to see outside that box on every level – with their clothes, their career and their creativity. You can shape the artist you want to become. Technique and understanding product are a big part of that, but it’s also about becoming a better, more open human.”

“It’s important to know the fundamentals,” agreed Marilyne, MAKE UP FOR EVER’s Professional Department Business Manager, “but we want students to be inspired to create too.

“At MAKE UP FOR EVER education is part of our DNA; so partnering with Blanche Macdonald is very important to us. We want to give you as much as you give us. We’re very close with Gina Hansen and the team at CurliQue Beauty. Our relationship is about much more than selling makeup. We want to get people excited about artistry!”

This school is like a lab, it’s time to experiment! It’s a community of love, full of people like us. As a busy Makeup Artist I’m not around other Makeup Artists most of the time. But here you can always ask other artists for their advice and their views.

Alexandre and Marilyne both showed their talents at a pair of presentations, sharing their techniques and product wisdom, and above all, their passions for embracing the creative journey.

“The foundation of art is knowledge,” continued Alexandre, “but as soon as you learn those rules put them aside. You need to rule the rules. I like to use products in new and different ways. Sometimes mistakes happen. If it looks good why not embrace it?”

For both Marilyne and Alexandre, presenting at a Makeup School that shares their creative philosophy demonstrated that inspiration is a two-way street.

I loved the comments the students gave me after the presentations. They told me they’ve been inspired to do more creative makeup.

“This school is like a lab,” smiled Alexandre. “It’s time to experiment! It’s a community of love, full of people like us. As a busy Makeup Artist I’m not around other Makeup Artists most of the time. But here you can always ask other artists for their advice and their views. The students at Blanche are artists! This is my second time I’ve come here and I can feel the energy.

“This is my first time here,” added Marilyne. “I love it! I’m super-impressed. Even the way everything is set up is so chic and professional. I loved the comments the students gave me after the presentations. They told me they’ve been inspired to do more creative makeup. We always say that you need to know the rules to know how to break them!”
