Hailey Bornais Exchanges Retail for Nail Artistry

Certified Nail Tech and Nail Studio Program Graduate Hailey Bornais loves having an artistic career with nails as her canvas. We recently caught up with Hailey at Brow Mastrz Spa to find out what she’s been up to since graduating from Blanche Macdonald’s Nail Studio Program.

Before transitioning into nail tech, what were you doing, and what inspired you to pursue a career in nails?

Before my time at Blanche’s Nail Studio Program, I found myself engaged in a range of warehouse and retail positions. Truth be told, these did not bring me much fulfilment. However, my passion for art and the desire to pursue a career that would enable me to express myself creatively without overwhelming myself led me to explore the world of nail art. With nails as my canvas, the possibilities for artistic expression are truly endless.

“Throughout my time at Blanche, the educators played an instrumental role in providing comprehensive guidance and support. However, it was during the art-focused sessions that I found myself truly in love with nails.”

What parts of the Nail Studio Program stood out in shaping your skills as a nail tech?

Possessing the fundamental skills acquired at Blanche Macdonald has helped me provide the necessary foundation for creating art and constructing nail sets. This ensures that the proper structure and level surface are achieved, not only for appearance but also for the longevity of the nails.

Were there any particular instructors who influenced your growth and development as a nail tech?

Before enrolling at Blanche Macdonald, I researched the achievements and works of the graduates featured on the institution’s website. While it’s hard to choose just one individual who captivated my attention, I’d have to say it was instructor Jamie Yin. I saw her extraordinary talent and her nail design art surpassed my wildest imagination. Witnessing her artistry served as an inspiration.

However, it was during the art-focused sessions that I found myself truly in love with nails. The vast array of styles, techniques, and products available in the industry ensures that the learning process is perpetual, allowing for continuous growth and refinement of your skills.

How did the school foster a sense of community among students, and in what ways has that support extended into your post-graduation journey?

The class sizes are kept small to ensure personalized attention and assistance, enabling me and my classmates to receive the necessary support to excel. The atmosphere is highly supportive, with instructors genuinely invested in your success. An additional advantage of attending Blanche is the network of job opportunities available through their job boards. I was able to receive my first salon job through one of the postings. I recently transitioned to a different salon and had the privilege of working alongside another successful graduate of Blanche who has established her own salon!

In what ways did Blanche expose you to the broader nail art industry, and how did those experiences contribute to your professional growth?

The opportunity to observe different instructors allowed me to witness the diverse range of styles and techniques that can be utilized to achieve beautiful nail art. One of the highlights of the program was the final project, which was my personal favourite. We were given the chance to incorporate hand-painted and 3D elements onto nails, which was a unique and exciting experience. It was fascinating to see the creative styles of my classmates and we were given full creative freedom to showcase our talents.

How did Blanche’s school equip you with the essential business and marketing skills needed to establish and grow your brand as a nail artist?

Blanche encouraged us to share our work online, whether it be through a website portfolio or social media platforms. Many potential clients now conduct research before choosing a service provider. By showcasing your work online, you can reach a wider audience and attract clients who are specifically interested in your style and expertise!

For many beauty professionals, social media platforms like Instagram serve as their portfolio. By consistently posting high-quality content, you can establish a strong online presence. Utilizing online platforms to showcase your work, you can demonstrate your skills, creativity, and unique style to potential clients. This can greatly enhance your visibility and increase your chances of attracting new clients.

Given the dynamic nature of the nail artistry field, how did the Nail Studio Program prepare you to adapt to changing trends and stay ahead in the industry?

Our instructors at Blanche Macdonald strongly encouraged us to explore new techniques and products to stay current with the ever-evolving trends in the nail industry. Social media platforms have become instrumental in shaping these trends.

I find great inspiration in following other talented nail techs on Instagram and seeing their designs. The artistry and creativity involved in nail art are what truly ignite my passion for this profession. Over the past few years, I have observed the growing popularity of hand-painted nail art, and I have dedicated myself to honing my skills. Practice makes progress!
