Program Overview

Over twelve life-changing months our Pro Hair Program will transform you into an industry-ready hair professional. Under the mentorship of our award-winning instructors you will gain a broad set of tools and techniques, learn the business inside out and develop the confidence and creativity to become a successful Hair professional.

Our Pro Hair Program goes beyond Cutting and Colouring to immerse you in all aspects of the hair industry. This is a step-by-step journey of the hair world, through Extensions, Perming, Fashion, Editorial, Runway, Photo Shoots, Platform work and much more. Ours is the first Hair Program in Canada to integrate the essential skills and applications for Hair for TV and Film, E-marketing, and Art and Technology. This is 360-degree education.

Each level involves a curated mix of theory, workshops, practical work, and real-life experience. You will take part in a series of professional photo shoots to capture your work, which you will use to build an industry-standard portfolio. We’ll explore the fundamentals of the business, coaching you in client relations, resumé building, networking and retail strategies. In our state-of-the-art professional salon, Q&A, you will develop proven technical ability while building a client base that will follow you throughout your career.

Our progressive curriculum allows you the flexibility and fluidity to move between salon, platform, competition, editorial, runway, television production studio and film set. These are transferable skills that can take your career to the local, national or international level.

The College has also created a customized module within the Pro Hair Full-time program, training students on how to treat and style natural, Afro-textured hair. There has been an educational gap when it comes to teaching students how to handle the unique needs of natural, textured hair. With this hands-on, specialized curriculum, our students will develop the skills and confidence to work with textured hair cutting, sculpting, styling, including dreadlocks, hot comb use, and wig fitting.

For over 60 years, the Blanche Macdonald Centre has been a space for education, for empowerment, for self-discovery. We have always rooted ourselves in the shared values of love, compassion, and inclusion. Our walls are home to a diverse community of lifelong learners engaged in the transformative and at times difficult work of self-growth. Through this work, we seek to amplify new and unheard voices.

To tell unique stories. To educate ourselves and to uplift others.

Our history, our culture, our community inspire us to do better, to be better.

Q&A Student Salon

To become a top Hair professional, you need hundreds of hours of practice and practical application. Only by cutting, colouring, and creating on a continual basis can you develop the speed, accuracy and confidence that you need to compete and excel. Q&A is our cutting edge, student-operated hair salon at the multi-million dollar Atelier Campus, nestled in the downtown hub of Robson Street. This is where our Pro Hair student stylists put their knowledge to practice.

Throughout your training at Blanche Macdonald, practical skills are honed and sharpened with countless hours working on outside clients at Q&A. Receiving and reacting to immediate constructive feedback from our expert instructors will build your confidence, skills and technical repertoire. You’ll learn how to deal with challenges on the spot and keep cool under pressure. You will also gain exclusive product knowledge, attend private training sessions, work with premiere product lines, and interact with industry professionals. This experiential approach to education will create a fluidity between your in-class and ‘real world’ experiences so that, when you graduate, you can make a seamless transition from classroom to career.

Licensing

There are no provincial licensing requirements to work as a Hairstylist in British Columbia. If you are going to be practicing Hairstyling in a different province or country, it is each student’s responsibility to verify the licensing requirements and training hours required. For those students who will be practicing Hairstyling outside of BC, the student is responsible for ensuring how the Blanche Macdonald training hours are applied to any licensing requirements of your home province or country. The Blanche Macdonald Centre is not responsible for how other provinces or countries recognize or apply the training hours for the Blanche Macdonald Hairstyling programs.

SkilledTradesBC Level 1 Designation under the Red Seal program

We are pleased to announce that Blanche Macdonald Centre has received full SkilledTradesBC Designation status with the SkilledTradesBC.

Students successfully completing select entry dates of the Blanche Macdonald Professional Hairstyling Program will have achieved the training to meet the SkilledTradesBC Hairstylist Level 1 technical training requirements toward Red Seal. If a passing grade on the SkilledTradesBC examination is achieved, the candidate will receive the SkilledTradesBC Certificate of Completion (Hairstylist Foundation Program) and once apprenticed, 1290 hours toward their work-based hours requirement for Red Seal. Subsequent training (Level 2 and on-the job training) will enable the candidate to continue on the Apprenticeship Pathway and upon successful completion of the examinations, achieve the SkilledTradesBC Certificate of Qualification (CofQ) with Red Seal Endorsement.

For those who want to practice Hairstyling in other Provinces, outside of BC:  for those students who wish to practice Hair in other provinces in Canada, specifically, provinces that require hairstylists to have the Red Seal Designation (Alberta, Saskatchewan, Manitoba, Ontario and Nova Scotia), Blanche Macdonald Centre has authorized Red Seal Designated Hair Courses. We schedule these Red Seal Hair dates two times a year in May/June and September/October. Red Seal is often described as the “the recognized passport” allowing you easy mobility to work across Canada. More and more provinces are moving towards Red Seal designation for Hair.

For those who only want to be Hairstylists in BC:  in BC, there is no licensing required for Hair and a Red Seal designation is not required. As such, Blanche Macdonald also offers additional options, with shorter, more condensed Hair and Barbering training with flexible schedules. If you are only planning on living and working in BC, then there is no need for you to have Red Seal Certification for Hair.

LEVEL 1: FUNDAMENTALS

Students begin with a complete immersion in the practical and hands-on aspects of cutting hair. You will develop a solid foundation of skills and knowledge to build upon throughout the program. Cutting, shampooing, draping, wet setting and thermal styling go hand in hand with client relation skills and the science behind the style: trichology, anatomy, bacteriology and sanitation. Through hands-on practice, in-class demonstrations and mannequin work, you’ll gain a “toolkit” of style elements that will allow you to replicate any cut. You’ll also develop the confidence to make the move from the classroom to Q&A, our student salon, where you’ll perform your new skills on real clients in real time.

LEVEL 2: COLOUR THEORY

Learn to harness the vast potential of hue in this hands-on study of colour theory and practical application of colour. Working from virgin and single applications through to double processing, you will learn the colour formulations, placements and creative possibilities of highlights and lowlights. Master the intricacies of bleach and tone, tackle colour corrections, and learn the importance of client consultation in working with this creative chemical medium.

LEVEL 3: CHEMICAL TREATMENTS

Channel your inner scientist in this extensive study of the chemical processes of hair. From perming and thermal straightening to hair reforming and chemical blowouts, you’ll learn to safely formulate chemical reactions for texturing and relaxing your clients’ locks. Develop proper consultation and analysis techniques to determine chemical hair structures, gain professional product knowledge, and learn how to appropriately work with all hair types.

LEVEL 4: EXTENSIONS

Big volume is big business. Add value to your freelance repertoire by learning the theory and practical application of natural and synthetic hair extensions. Learn to cornrow hair for single and full-head braids, apply hair and attach wefts to a single-track row, double track row and full head weave placement. Delving deeper into the art of extensions, we’ll examine different styles of individual strand applications, including fusions, clip-ins, tape-ins and Euro Locks. Our expert instructors will guide you through wig building and custom fitting, and coach you in the importance of client consultation.

LEVEL 5: NATURAL, TEXTURED HAIR

Understand the art and science of working with Afro-textured hair. Identify the essential hair types of textured hair and execute the proper techniques and treatment of shampoo and conditioner specifically for textured hair. Learn the skills of textured hair cutting, textured hair sculpting and working with textured hair chemicals. Study the porosity and density of the hair, curl assessment and curl enhancement.

Practice core cutting for wet or dry hair and styling techniques including finger twists and finger coils, creating dreadlocks and dreads on permed hair, rod setting, hot comb use and double silk press.

This module also includes working with Wigs and Hairpieces. You will be able to provide a variety of wig services to your client, from fitting wigs, shaping and cutting Wigs and Hairpieces. There will also be hands on training relating to Textured Hair relaxing and straightening treatments.

LEVEL 6: HAIR FOR TV & FILM

From the artful disarray of Edward Scissorhands to the double buns of Princess Leia, hair professionals have been making on-screen icons for decades. In this course we will guide you through every aspect of Hair for Television and Film. Starting with set etiquette, you’ll learn how to work with a creative team and navigate the complex world of film unions. We’ll coach you in the trinity of critical production skills: script breakdown, character development and maintaining continuity. Putting theory into practice, you’ll conceive and create a winning on-screen look, which will be captured in a professional photoshoot.

LEVEL 7: PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT

Here’s where your creativity takes flight. Together we’ll examine the latest hair trends and techniques for runway and fashion editorial, break down on-set etiquette and show you how to coordinate hair with the artistic vision of a creative team – makeup artists, fashion stylists and photographers. Your portfolio will take shape as you develop styles for avant-garde, editorial, bridal, elegant evening, long hair and fantasy looks for a series of professional photo shoots.

LEVEL 8: DESIGN FORUM

Time to show us, and yourself, everything you’ve learned so far. You’ll design blueprint formulations and structures of signature cut and colours, before turning them into reality on live models for a professional photoshoot. Learn how to work with a photographer and understand the basics of lighting. ‘Before’ and ‘After’ photos will be a perfect addition to your growing professional portfolio.

LEVEL 9: ART & TECHNOLOGY

In today’s digital world it is essential to be able to market yourself online. Blanche Macdonald is the first college in Canada to integrate Art & Technology into an advanced and progressive Hair curriculum. Within our state-of-the-art Mac computer lab you will learn the fundamentals of design applications and create a personal Digital Portfolio. Develop image editing skills and advance into digital production to create a personal business card and build your own professional website.

LEVEL 10: SALON PREP & BUSINESS

Develop the skills and confidence you’ll need in your role as an emerging Hair Professional. We’ll teach you how to compose a great resumé, search for a job, perform a winning interview and network like a pro. Learn about accessing government resources, essential accounting and budgeting practices, retail and merchandising strategies, inventory control, salon operations and marketing essentials. We’ll take you to some of the very best salons in Vancouver to network and examine different professional environments. By the end of the course, you’ll be prepared to build a successful hair business from the ground up.
